Modbus to BACnet gateways: connecting Modbus devices to a BACnet BMS
How a Modbus to BACnet gateway maps registers to BACnet objects, when MS/TP is involved, and which ICP DAS gateway fits each direction.
PoE classes, power budgets, switches and injectors, and the ICP DAS PoE I/O series for ceilings, risers and small technical rooms.

In ceilings, risers and small technical rooms, the difficult part of adding a few I/O points is often the power supply, not the signal. PoE I/O modules take their power from the Ethernet cable, so one cable from a PoE switch replaces both a local 24 V supply and a separate data connection. This article covers PoE classes and power budgets, switches and injectors, the ICP DAS PoE I/O series, and the limits of PoE in buildings.
The power sourcing equipment (PSE), usually a PoE switch or an injector, first detects a compliant powered device (PD) and only then switches on the nominal 48 V. Power runs either on the data pairs or on the spare pairs, and the PD has to accept both. The NS-205PSE switch, for example, feeds power on pins 1, 2 and 3, 6, while the tNS-200IN injector uses the spare pairs on pins 4, 5 and 7, 8. During detection the PD signals a class that tells the PSE how much power it may draw.
| Class | Standard | Max. power at PSE port | Max. power at PD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (default) | IEEE 802.3af | 15.4 W | 12.95 W |
| 1 | IEEE 802.3af | 4.0 W | 3.84 W |
| 2 | IEEE 802.3af | 7.0 W | 6.49 W |
| 3 | IEEE 802.3af | 15.4 W | 12.95 W |
| 4 | IEEE 802.3at (PoE+) | 30 W | 25.5 W |
The difference between PSE and PD power covers the loss in up to 100 m of cable. IEEE 802.3bt adds higher classes that I/O modules do not need.
A technical room on one floor gets an 8-port NSM-208PSE switch. It supplies these devices, with class and maximum consumption taken from their data sheets:
| Device | Function | Class | Max. consumption |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 x PET-7015 | 7 RTD inputs each | 1 | 2 x 2.6 W |
| 1 x PET-7005 | 8 thermistor inputs, 4 DO | 1 | 3.0 W |
| 2 x tPET-P2R2 | 2 DI and 2 power relays each | 1 | 2 x 1.0 W |
| 1 x DL-302 | CO2, temperature and humidity | 1 | 2.65 W |
| 1 x ACS-10VP-MF | Proximity card reader | 1 | 1.7 W |
| 1 x ALM-Horn-RGB | Siren with RGB light | 3 | 6.6 W |
The actual maximum load is about 21 W. A budget based on class limits, which is what a PSE may reserve per port, comes to 7 x 4.0 W + 15.4 W = 43.4 W. Every device stays within the 15.4 W per port that the NSM-208PSE delivers. For the 48 V supply of the switch, the data sheet gives 2.8 A at 48 VDC with all PDs at full load. Sizing for that value covers any 802.3af device on any port.
Other building devices with PoE input include the DL-302 and CL-202-E air quality data loggers, the PIR-230-E motion, temperature and humidity sensor, the ACS-10VP-MF and ACS-11P-MF card readers and the ALM-Horn-RGB siren.

The PET-7017-10 is a PoE-powered Ethernet analog input module for engineers who need voltage or current measurement on a networked I/O node. Its inputs can be set as 10 differential or 20 single-ended channels in software, and each channel can be given its own range, so one module can serve mixed sensor types on the same network. Each channel offers a choice of voltage ranges from ±150 mV to ±10 V and current ranges of ±20 mA, 0 ~ 20 mA and 4 ~ 20 mA, selected with jumpers. Resolution is 16-bit, and the module has two sampling modes: normal mode at 10 Hz total and fast mode at 50 Hz total. Open wire detection is available for 4 ~ 20 mA inputs, and differential channels are rated for 240 Vrms overvoltage protection.Configuration and monitoring are handled through a built-in web server with Web HMI, and the module supports Modbus TCP and Modbus UDP. Access is controlled by ID, password and IP filter. The unit is powered either from PoE (IEEE 802.3af, Class 1) or from a +12 ~ +48 VDC terminal block, and it mounts on a DIN rail.ApplicationsBuilding automationFactory automationMachine automationRemote maintenanceRemote diagnosisTesting equipment
The ACS-10V-MF CR is an RFID proximity card reader for access control, combining door access, voice guidance and elevator floor control in one unit. It reads Mifare Classic, Ultralight and DESFire cards and can store up to 8192 cards, making it suited to community door access and elevator control. The reader includes electric door lock control and door position detection, plus an anti-sabotage micro switch. It keeps access records and provides a built-in RTC and WDT. Elevator floor control supports up to 16 floors.Connectivity covers a 10/100Base-T(X) Ethernet port, an RS-485 port and CAN (ISO-11898-2). Four digital inputs and two Form C relay outputs support door and system integration. The unit is wall mounted and rated for -20 ~ +60 °C operation.ApplicationsCommunity door access controlElevator access and floor controlAccess control systems requiring door position monitoring
The ACS-10V-MF-TC is an RFID proximity card reader for access control systems. It reads ISO 14443 A cards, including Mifare Classic, Ultralight and DESFire, and combines door access control, voice guidance and elevator floor control in one unit. This -TC ordering code is the Chinese voice version of the reader. The built-in voice message function gives users audible feedback at the door. The unit has an Ethernet port, an RS-485 port and a CAN bus interface, so it can be integrated into different access control architectures.Door security is handled by an electric door lock output, door position detection and an anti-sabotage micro switch. Access records are kept on the device, and it can store up to 8192 cards. It is suited to community door access and elevator control installations.ApplicationsCommunity door access controlElevator floor controlAccess control systems
The ACS-10VP-MF is a wall-mounted RFID proximity card reader for access control. It reads Mifare Classic, Ultralight and DESFire cards and combines door access, voice guidance and elevator floor control in one unit. This ordering code is the English voice version. Its Ethernet port supports Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af, Class 1), so the reader can be powered from the same cable as its network connection. An RS-485 port is also provided for serial communication. Two digital inputs and two Form C relay outputs allow the reader to handle door lock control and door position detection, and a micro switch provides anti-sabotage detection.Stores up to 8192 cards and provides access records.Supports elevator floor control for up to 32 floors.Built-in RTC and WDT for timekeeping and watchdog protection.ApplicationsCommunity door accessElevator controlAccess control systems
